Application for Admission to ​the University of Alabama
​Superintendents' Academy


Admissions Policy Statement

The University of Alabama Superintendents’ Academy (Academy) is a non-degree, professional development program of the College of Education, The University of Alabama in collaboration with the Alabama State Board of Education. 

To be considered for selection, please complete the online application below.  Applications are due October 1 annually.

​To be considered for admission, applicants must meet the eligibility requirements described below and submit the completed application materials to the Selection Committee:
  • must be a resident Alabama educator who is eligible to be an elected or appointed superintendent in the state of Alabama,
  • generally must hold a minimum of an Alabama Class A Certification in the Area of Educational Administration and Supervision,
  • must make a commitment to complete the activities and requirements of the Academy,
  • must make satisfactory arrangements with your employer to be away from your workplace for participation in The University of Alabama Superintendents’ Academy,
  • must demonstrate the ability to make a meaningful and positive contribution to elementary and secondary education in the state of Alabama.

    II. Goals Statement

    Please attach your written response to the question below. Do not exceed three typed, double-spaced, 8-1/2 X 11 pages.  Be sure your name appears on each page.

    What are your professional goals, and how will those goals allow you to make a meaningful and positive contribution to elementary and secondary education in Alabama?

    III. Letters of Recommendation
    ​Include with your application 
    three letters of recommendation from references who are familiar with your work, abilities, and experiences and who understand the issues, challenges, and environment of (P-12) public education in Alabama. One letter should be from your superintendent or a direct supervisor.  The letters should be combined into one file for submission.

    IV. Résumé or Vita
    Please attach a current résumé or vita which includes, at least, the following:  educational experience and professional preparation; professional work experiences, professional affiliations and memberships; awards and honors received and offices held; and any other accomplishments and contributions that you consider relevant to and reflective of your qualification for participation in the UASA.  List any professional certifications in school administration and supervision.

    Applicant's Commitment

    • If selected to participate in The University of Alabama Superintendents’ Academy (Academy), I agree to attend all scheduled sessions and to participate in planned activities.  I understand that my failure to attend scheduled session(s) may prevent me from successfully completing the Academy program.
    • I understand that persons selected as Academy members will participate in a tuition-free training program; however, I understand that I must pay my travel, lodging, and other expenses incurred while attending the activities of the Academy. 
    • I understand that I will be required to participate in all assessments of my performance in those activities sponsored by the Academy, and I understand that this is a rigorous program of study.  Simple admission is no guarantee of completion.
    • I understand that this is not an academic program of The University of Alabama, nor is it a licensing or certification program of the Alabama State Board of Education.
    • I understand that participation in and completion of the The University of Alabama Superintendents’ Academy program of study does not insure that I will be employed as a superintendent.
    • I have made satisfactory arrangements with my employer to be away from my workplace for participation in The University of Alabama Superintendents’ Academy.
    • I am eligible to be an elected or appointed superintendent in the state of Alabama.
